In the 11 th century, traders brought Islam to the islands of the archipelago. Just like in Indonesia, Buddhist in the past adapted to their needs and beliefs, so accepting Islam, in addition to their conditions. However, it was not the center of Islamic culture in Indonesia, this scatteredness seems to offer a great weakness, when the Dutch arrived.

The Dutch weren't the first Europeans to occupy Indonesia, Portuguese and British had been there before, but with little effect. From 1602 to 1799, the country was ruled by the Dutch Company of the West Indies. In 1956, Sukarno introduced the concept of guided democracy, which meant rejection of ties with the West. An important consequence was a rapid descent into economic chaos. Irian Jaya in Indonesia joined in 1963. An attempted communist coup in 1965, was brutally repressed rare, an eradication campaign that continued more ruthlessly by the authoritarian right, Raden Suharto regime, which overthrew Sukarno in 1966. Suharto also ended confrontation with Malaysia, which has persisted through the years Sukarno, Indonesia has taken her back to the United Nations reached an agreement with Papua New Guinea and East Timor invaded in 1975.
